Persian rugs are more than decorative objects; they are intricate, handwoven pieces of art, traditionally crafted by women and cherished as cultural treasures. We remove our shoes before stepping on them, honoring their beauty and the labor behind each knot. Yet, despite their value, they are still meant to be stepped on. This project draws a parallel between these rugs and the experience of Iranian women—precious, resilient, and deeply woven into the fabric of society, yet often dismissed, overlooked, and ‘swept under the rug.’ The narrative of protection, of being kept safe, becomes an excuse to suppress and control.
